Who Owns Tumblr? (& Story Behind It)

Tumblr, founded by David Karp in 2007, is a microblogging and social media platform known for its highly customizable pages and free-form content sharing. Within two weeks of its launch, it attracted 75,000 users, quickly gaining popularity due to its ease of use, free access, and SEO-friendly features. Yahoo acquired Tumblr for $1.1 billion in 2013, but by 2016, it failed to meet revenue expectations. Verizon Communications took over Yahoo in 2017, placing Tumblr under its Oath subsidiary, and later sold it to Automattic, the owner of WordPress, for less than $3 million in 2019. Tumblr’s success is rooted in its engaged community, reblogging system, and support for various media formats, making it a unique space for fandoms, businesses, and social discussions. Despite competition from platforms like Medium and Wix, Automattic’s backing may help Tumblr sustain its relevance, especially as users dissatisfied with changes on Twitter explore alternative platforms.

The Story of Tumblr

David Karp’s primary focus on Tumblr has always been creativity. He wanted users to be able to share cool stuff like articles, links, images, or videos without an external drive for rewards that other platforms encourage users. Karp wanted to keep Tumblr simple and create an environment where users could comfortably do what they wanted. Let’s take a look at the story of Tumblr.

  • David Karp founded Tumblr in 2007 as a microblogging and social networking website. David Karp released it in February 2007, and after its release, Tumblr gained 75,000 users in just two weeks. It was a great success for a start-up.
  • The first acquisition took place in 2013. Yahoo and Tumblr agreed on $1.1 billion in cash. Many Tumblr users didn’t want that change and started campaigns. David Karp continued his position as CEO on Tumblr.
  • In 2016, Yahoo announced that Tumblr did not meet sales goals as estimated. Yahoo wrote down the value of Tumblr.
  • In 2017, Yahoo was bought by Verizon Communications. After that, Verizon Communications placed Yahoo and Tumblr in its Oath subsidiary.
  • In November 2017, David Karp, the founder of Tumblr, announced that he had left Tumblr.
  • In 2019, Verizon Communications announced that they sold Tumblr to the Automattic operator of the blog service WordPress- with less than $3 million. Now Automattic owns Tumblr.
why did Tumblr become so popular

Why Did Tumblr Become So Popular?

Tumblr’s unique content formats, customizable designs, and flexibility have contributed to its popularity. The platform supports text, GIFs, music, and videos, appealing to fan groups, subcultures, businesses, and social issues. Unlike many social media sites, Tumblr allows for anonymous interactions, making it a preferred space for users who value privacy.

Key factors behind Tumblr’s popularity include:

  • Ease of Use & Free Access: Users can quickly create an account and share multimedia content.
  • SEO-Friendly Platform: Built-in SEO tools help boost content visibility.
  • Engaged Community: The reblogging system fosters content sharing and discovery.
  • Mobile Adaptability: The mobile-friendly interface ensures a smooth user experience.

Tumblr’s design flexibility and community-driven engagement make it a standout platform for both casual users and businesses.

Who Is the Owner of Tumblr?

Tumblr is now a part of Automattic, which is the operator of the blog service for WordPress. Automattic signed a deal with Tumblr for less than $3 million in 2019 from Verizon Communications. Nowadays, blogging and microblogging have many competitors in the market, like Wix, Weebly, and Medium. That’s why it is tough to sustain its success in that environment. But the support of Automattic can change the value of Tumblr.

Hello. We had a suggestion regarding tumblr. Reveal and expose the truth about tumblr pages that are being cloned by websites: TUMBRAL, Tumgir, and Tumbex. I am an artist who posts regularly on the real Tumblr site. But last month discovered all of my copyrighted works have been duplicated, cloned and display on their malicious pop up infested websites. Several complaints to the real tumblr reveals no help, None. I posted some long written letters about this problem on my real tumblr page. The fake sites also took them. Tumblr, has been compromised, hacked or is in partnership with fraudulent websites that steal our pages. We also found many, many others with the same issue of cloned pages.
We searched our name on google and discovered our pages are on some other website that mimics tumblr. We appreciate you reading about this. We wanted you to know what’s going on.
      Sincerely yours, ed
