How to Customize Instagram’s Explore Page (2025)

The Instagram Explore Page is a treasure trove of content tailored just for you, offering personalized posts, reels, and stories that align with your interests. But what if the content doesn’t quite match your taste, or you want to refine it? In this guide, we’ll explain what the Explore Page is, how Instagram’s algorithm tailors it to your preferences, and, most importantly, how to customize it to better suit your needs.

What Is the Instagram Explore Page?

The Explore Page is Instagram discovery hub, allowing users to discover content beyond the accounts they follow. You can access it by tapping the magnifying glass icon in the app. This section offers a mix of trending posts, niche content, and recommendations, all based on your past activity on Instagram.

Think of the Explore Page as your personalized mood board—it adapts to your likes, searches, and engagement patterns. For example, if you spend time liking posts about photography, your Explore Page will soon be filled with photography-related content. It’s designed to keep users engaged, but it’s not always perfect.

If your Explore Page doesn’t resonate with your current interests, don’t worry! Instagram gives you some control to fine-tune what you see, and we’ll show you how.

How the Instagram Explore Page Algorithm Works

Instagram’s Explore Page is powered by a complex recommendation algorithm. It analyzes your behavior on the platform to predict what content you’d enjoy. Here’s what influences the algorithm:

  1. Likes and Comments: The posts you engage with are a major factor. Double-tap on posts about fitness? Expect more workout content.
  2. Saved Posts: Saving a post signals to Instagram that you find the content valuable, which increases its relevance in your feed.
  3. Search History: What you’ve recently searched for shapes your Explore Page. For example, searching for “travel tips” might fill your page with wanderlust-inducing posts.
  4. Watch Time on Reels and Videos: The longer you watch certain videos, the more similar content you’ll see.
  5. Following Patterns: The accounts you follow and their activity also influence your Explore Page.

Instagram constantly updates its algorithm, making it more intuitive and user-centric. While this creates a dynamic and engaging experience, it can sometimes misfire and show irrelevant content.

How to Customize Instagram Explore Page

If your Explore Page is filled with content you’re no longer interested in, here’s how you can customize it to better match your preferences:

Clear Your Search History

Your search history plays a significant role in shaping the Explore Page. To reset your preferences:

  • Go to Settings > Security > Clear Search History.
  • This step removes past search inputs and helps refresh your recommendations.

Use the “Not Interested” Option

Instagram allows you to mark specific posts as irrelevant:

  • Tap the three dots in the top right corner of a post on your Explore Page.
  • Select “Not Interested.”
  • Instagram will reduce similar content over time.

Engage With Relevant Content

Proactively interact with posts you want to see more of. Like, comment, save, or share posts in the niches you care about. This signals to the algorithm that you prefer this type of content.

Follow Relevant Accounts

Following creators or pages in your areas of interest helps refine your Explore Page. Instagram’s algorithm pulls inspiration from their activity as well.

Take Advantage of Explore’s Refresh Feature

If you want an immediate reset:

  • Go to your Explore Page.
  • Tap and hold the screen, then refresh the page to generate new content recommendations.

Clear Cache (For App Performance)

Sometimes, Instagram’s cached data may cause irrelevant posts to persist. On Android devices, go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Clear Cache. For iOS, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the app.

Bonus: Tips for Staying in Control

  • Audit Your Activity: Regularly review the accounts you follow and unfollow those that no longer interest you.
  • Diversify Engagement: To explore new content, engage with a broader range of topics and accounts.
  • Monitor Third-Party Apps: Avoid connecting apps that might interfere with your Instagram activity or skew your preferences.

By following these steps, you can fine-tune your Explore Page into a space that inspires and excites you.

“Clear history“ does not stop instagram from suggesting previous people you’ve searched for in the past. For example, if you searched for someone you don’t want your spouse to know about, then delete search history…freaking Instagram still suggests that individual you searched for once you type in first one or 2 letters of their name . It’s so frustrating and disappointing from instagram.

Instagram should create more topics that lets a person manage by category vs each individual person/profile.
Ex – politics, social advocacy, religion, TokTok videos , etc
