What Is an Instagram AR Filter?
AR, or Augmented Reality, is actually not as far away as we think, very much in our lives, in our Instagram stories! Instagram’s face filters, which most of us use, are made using AR. AR is described as virtual objects overlapping real images using the object recognition feature of devices; we can give Snapchat’s classic dog filter as one of the first examples in our lives.
It was a big deal when they added Instagram face filters to the stories section in 2017. Of course, we can’t say that this idea belongs to Instagram because Snapchat’s lenses have been around for a long time. In May 2018, Instagram released the closed beta of Spark AR Studio for some celebrities and brands. With this application, Instagram was allowed to make original filters for themselves and their followers. After a short while, Spark AR Studio was available to everyone.
How to Make an Instagram Effect with Spark AR Studio?
If you want to know how to make your filter on Instagram, you will need your phone and computer. Starting with a try on projects of this type is the best way to learn. You can create a Facial Distortion effect by following the steps below.
- Download and install the latest version of Spark AR Studio, available on Mac and PC.
- Go to the Examples tab and select Face Distortion.
- Save your project in a local folder by going to “File”> “Save.”
How to Change the Filter on Instagram?
Now that you have opened a sample project, you can modify it. Find and select the “faceMesh_distortion” item on the left side of the window in the “Scene” tab. Find “Deformation” on the right part of the window. Make sure the deformation window is enlarged. Under Blend Shapes, change any of the sliders to adjust the facial distortion.
How to Use Your Own Instagram Filter in a Video?
Up to this point, we’ve used the sample video to see our effect. You can use your webcam to see how the effect will look on you. You can change the introduction video as follows:
- On the far left side of the window, find and click the camera icon.
- Choose one of the faces offered.
- If you have a webcam attached to your computer, you will see a button for it just above the faces.
- Select it for a live interactive preview.
Your effect is automatically updated and applied to your face. From here, make any other adjustments you want and then save the project.
How to Export an Instagram Filter?
We will export a final file that we can use to upload the filter to Facebook, post to Facebook, or Instagram (you can choose only one).
- Select “Export” from the File menu.
- A window opens, showing how much space your filter will use on different device types.
- If everything is green and checked, hit the “Export” button. (Note: If not all device types are marked, you can export your file, but this may cause problems.)
- Then choose a save location that you can find easily and choose “.arexport” as the file type.
- Open a web browser and log into the Facebook / Instagram account where you want to broadcast the effect.
- Go to this address and select the Continue box on the login screen.
- Click the “Install Effect” button in the top-right corner of the page.
- Select the platform (Facebook or Instagram) you want the effect to live on (in this case, Instagram) and give your filter a name and hit the “Next” button at the bottom of the screen to proceed.
- In the “Effect Icon” section, drag and drop a picture you want to represent your filter on Instagram.
- Find the file you exported earlier by opening a file window.
- Drag and drop this file into the “Effect File” section of the page.
- Check the Agreement checkbox.
- Select “Install” and “Continue.”
- Confirm the information that opens and click the “Continue” button.
How to Test Your Own Instagram AR Filter?
Now you can test the effect you have prepared. On the next page, you will find two options: “Preview in application” and “Get preview link.” “Preview in app” allows you to test your filter for 60 minutes from the account you are currently logged in to.

The option “Get preview link” provides a link that you can send to your friends, family, or colleagues to test your filter; remember, this link can only be used 200 times a day. You can also send this preview link to yourself (via email, chat, or whatever you want) as you will need it later.
How to Post an Instagram AR Filter?
It’s far much easier to post a filter than making one.
- Press the “Next Steps” button at the bottom of the screen.
- Choose a category.
- Drag and drop the video into the “Demo video” section of this page.
- Press “Next”.
- Choose when your filter airs.
- You can start right after approval or set a start and end date. Press “Next”.
- On the “Information Review” page, write a summary of what your effect is doing. This is for review purposes only and is not publicly available.
- Then when you click on it, you will be able to review everything you have done so far. Make sure everything is correct and click “Send for Review” at the bottom of the page. Reviews take about a business day, but could potentially take longer.
Conclusion – Let Facebook Do The Rest
Now all you have to do is wait for your filter to be approved. When this happens, your friends and followers can find your filter in the app. If you liked this article, you can see our article about finding new Instagram filters or our best Instagram filters list.

Making an AR filter is the single most fun thing you can do with your device. Been doing it since I first got my smartphone last year.
