Tumblr is a microblogging platform that allows users to explore and create diverse content. To filter out NSFW (Not Safe for Work) content, Tumblr introduced Safe Mode, restricting certain posts from appearing in searches or dashboards. Many users wonder if it’s possible to turn off Safe Mode to access all content freely. While Tumblr previously allowed users to disable this feature, recent policy changes have made it mandatory for all users, limiting access to sensitive content.Â
What Is the Safe Mode on Tumblr?
Safe Mode on Tumblr is a built-in feature designed to filter out NSFW (Not Safe for Work) content, creating a safer browsing experience for users. By default, Safe Mode is enabled when you first sign up, preventing restricted content from appearing in searches or on your dashboard. This feature ensures a secure environment, especially for younger users, by limiting access to sensitive material.
Tumblr NSFW Update
In December 2018, Tumblr banned all NSFW content due to an issue with the App Store. App Store removed Tumblr from its services because it had abusive content regarding children. If you still see abusive content it is possible to unfollow and report someone on Tumblr.
To restore this issue, Tumblr decided to remove NSFW content for good. This way, they can offer a more all-around service.
Fortunately, it is still possible to see the NSFW content on Tumblr but from other platforms.
After Tumblr banned the NSFW content, other alternative social platforms have risen and started to include the NSFW content on Tumblr. They also welcome newcomers from Tumblr.
Here are some of these social platforms;
- newTumbl
- BDSMLR
- Dreamwidth
These social platforms have the style of Tumblr, excluding Dreamwidth. It is possible to see the things you cannot see on Tumblr on these platforms. Especially newTumblr resembles Tumblr, and it is older than the ban.
Although it was possible to turn Tumblr’s safe mode off through various ways and devices, it is now banned permanently.

hello I can’t turn off the safe mode of my tumblr account. I did not see anything as you mentioned in the filtering section, there is only the extracted labels text, I would be glad if you can help
Hi, Tumblr removed the NSFW content in 2018, so there is no safe mode anymore because it is all safe now.
I’d like to turn off safe mode on Tumblr since I feel like I am missing out on most of the good feed. Great article.
